FED EX CUP / Thomas wins after Leishman fades at Dell Technologies Championship

Justin Thomas has taken out the second Fed Ex Cup Playoff tournament with a three-shot victory over Jordan Spieth.

Marc Leishman had a two shot lead going into the final nine holes of the Dell Technologies Championship after making the turn in just 30 strokes. The 33-year-old Australian looked right at home on the big stage and was staring down the biggest win of his career.

However a bad drive at the 10th saw Leishman have to take a penalty drop and scrambled to save bogey. Two holes later and another two bogeys and his lead had vanished. When Thomas made birdie at the 13th hole, he never looked back and easily claimed victory.

Leishman finished the back nine with 40, 10-strokes more than the front nine.

“You know it was obviously a disappointing back nine for me,” Leishman said afterwards. “Got things going just the way I wanted to on the front and then a bad tee shot on 10. There was some tough holes out there but certainly not ten shots tougher than the front nine.”

“It’s disappointing. But you know, with everything that’s going on in the world, I mean, there’s certainly worse things going on. You know, you have to put things into perspective.”

Leishman rises to 13th place in the Fed Ex Cup standings as the field is trimmed to 70 for the BMW Championship in two weeks time.

“I’m really happy to be going home for a few days, see the family, and just recharge the batteries,” Leishman said. “That back nine took a bit out of me today.”
