Cameron Smith wins the 2022 Open Championship with incredible back nine heroics

Australia’s Cameron Smith is the 2022 Open Champion.

Cameron Smith has become the first Australian to win the Open Championship since Greg Norman in 1993 after holding off Cameron Young and Rory McIlroy at St.Andrews.

Trailing the leaders Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland by four shots going into the final day, Smith produced one of the all-time great final rounds to win by a single stroke.

American Cameron Young leads the field by two shots after the opening day of the 150th Open Championship at St.Andrews.

Rory McIlroy posted seven birdies and one bogey on his way to an opening round 66 to sit just two shots behind Young.

The best of the Australians was Cameron Smith who carded a 5-under par 67 to be right in contention early in the tournament.

Greg Norman disinvited to 150th Open Champions dinner

The R&A have issued a statement confirming they have told LIV Golf frontman and two-time Open Champion Greg Norman is not welcome at the 150th Open Champions dinner celebration this week.

Worried that he may use the occasion to champion the new Saudi-backed LIV Golf Tour, the R&A confirmed they disinvited Norman to the event.
