2013 US PGA Championship: Adam Scott and Jim Furyk lead after opening round

Adam Scott back in contention at another major after firing opening round 65 at 2013 US PGA Championship.

In April at Augusta National, Adam Scott completed his transformation from a good player to a major winner and as he fired an opening round 5-under 65 at the 2013 US PGA Championship this morning, he is showing the world he is a big time golfer who puts himself to win major after major.

The round was good enough to put Scott into a share of the lead with Jim Furyk after the first round at Oak Hill Country Club. It included a string of five consecutive birdies through holes four to eight that Scott commented on after his round.

“Probably the best run I’ve ever had and I just hit really nice shots and didn’t leave myself too much work.” Scott said.

“You have to take advantage of that if you are feeling that and I was through the turn there.  It was a dream start after kind of a nervous first couple of holes.”

Scott looked set to tie for the course record at Oak Hill which currently held by Ben Hogan and Curtis Strange. He birdied the drivable par-4 14th hole after getting up-and-down from a tricky lie, but a bogey on 16th hole saw Scott eventually settling for a round of 5-under par and a share of the lead with Jim Furyk who shot the same score earlier in the day.

Lee Westwood and unheralded Canadian golfer David Hearn sit just a shot behind Scott and Furyk with a bunch of golfers on 3-under par including Australians Marcus Fraser and Jason Day.

Jason Day is ubiquitous on major championship leaderboards and it is no surprise to see him shoot a solid opening round marred only by a bogey on the seventh hole.

Fraser’s opening round was a little different. After starting with back to back bogeys, Fraser turned it around with five birdies to give himself a good shot at making his mark on a major golf tournament.
